So, yesterday morning the kids were quizzing each other about birthdays and ages, and it was determined that this was the year mom will turn 40. I, of course, was willing to let this particular birthday pass unnoticed. Upon figuring out that I will be forty this year, Sam … with every good intention said to me,
Sam “For someone that’s so old, you look really great, Mom.”
Mom“Thanks, honey.” (incredulous look passes over face … smiles in an attempt to overcome the shock) “Let’s listen to the radio for a little while.”
Mom turns on the radio.
And what’s playing on the radio you may ask …
Well I’ve been ‘fraid of changing ‘cause I
Built my life around you
But time makes you bolder
Children get older, I’m getting older too
The chorus to Landslide, by Stevie Nicks, 1975.
Like a kick in the stomach. Booo….
Aw, Chloe! That song makes me cry almost every time I hear. Yesterday as I was driving, for example. Those line in particular, I have to make a concentrated effort not to think about. (Also, you do look great.)
Thanks, Nichole. You look great too, but luckily you’re not so OLD. I just kept thinking … timing, timing, timing … not so good. By the way, HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!!!
40… whoa. I guess that’s right, since I was 19 when you were born. Seems like yesterday. (FYI, You’ll be saying that about things before long!) I was thrilled when you were born, and you’ve been a blessing ever since. And Sam’s right – you DO look good!
You’re so sweet! I was just going through pictures looking for something the other day and found the ones of me at your wedding. I can’t believe Sam’s 12 either. Miss you!!
