Paula’s Recipes …

Well, the Hamburger Steaks were worth repeating… I just haven’t had a chance to post the recipe yet.  But I will.  I also tried the Cauliflower Layered Salad from the same issue, and it was good too.  As far as I’m concerned I’ve already gotten my money’s worth from this one.  There are still a few more recipes to try in the magazine.  Yeah!

What’s for dinner tonight?

Well, … I think we’ll be having Hamburger Steak, from page 26 of the current issue of Cooking with Paula Deen. Looks tasty, and … better yet… doesn’t sound like it will take six hours and an army of side-kicks to get it on the table. Should it prove worth sharing, I’ll post it here for you to try too.

We also seem to be down to our last jar of Cranberry Sauce, so I guess I’ll be putting a pot in the slow cooker tonight.

An Easter Funny … not bunny

In going through all the pictures from Easter morning, I found this one.  Oddly enough, is seems to capture the general tone at our house … just a little wacky.  I like to call this one “Trying to dump the baby into the flower pot”.  The good news is…. she didn’t actually get dumped into the flower pot.  The days of a nice calm portrait may be history here.

What’s a Mom to do?

So … yesterday, I took a veteran homeschooler’s advice and asked my three older children what they would like to study as electives as they move into Middle School, and eventually High School.  Here is the list they compiled, in no particular order.

  • Home Ec
  • Cooking Science
  • Sewing
  • Design
  • Art History
  • Large Animal Vet Science
  • Greek (failing that …. Italian)
  • French x 2
  • Computer Science
  • Acoustic Guitar x 2
  • Flute
  • Piano
  • Typing
  • Home Design
  • Journalism
  • Sculpture
  • Woodworking
  • Landscaping/Horticulture
  • French Cooking
To make matters more interesting, the children assure me that they have forgotten some things but that it would be “okay” for me to begin here.  What was I thinking?

Genius says, if you’re listening to …

All Along the Watchtower by U2, then you will like the following songs to accompany it in the play list.

  • Bad Love, Eric Clapton
  • The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonight, REM
  • Like a Hurricane, Neil Young
  • The Hounds of Winter, Sting
  • Red Rain, Peter Gabriel
  • Pulling Mussels, Squeeze
  • Too Much, Dave Matthews
  • Sunday, Bloody Sunday, U2
  • Copperline, James Taylor
  • Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around, Stevie Nicks
  • Late in the Evening, Paul Simon
  • Hannah Jane, Hootie & The Blowfish

Aren’t some of these on 8-track? Who’s feeling old? Not me. Because I have some cool & hip music. Genius says if I listen to They Might Be Giants, I might also like: R.E.M., Duran Duran, John Parr and the Cure. The Cure? Why not just stick a fork in me and put up Echo and the Bunnymen? Now I’m feeling old.

One 6 lb. Turkey Breast …

… and a family of six. Just how far will that go? Well, let me tell you. If you’re creative, it can be almost like Thanksgiving in March…. turkey for days. Harris Teeter had a special on turkey breast last week, so we bought one.

  • Monday the turkey breast was roasted.
  • Wednesday the turkey breast was turned into Turkey a la King.
  • and Friday the last pieces will be turned into Veggie Soup using the veggies mentioned a few days ago. (See below.)

That’s the best $5.70 I’ve spent at the grocery in a while. I think we’ll finally run out Friday.

It’s like Randy was in my head…

… and it was a little a lot, weird. Adam Lambert’s version of Ring of Fire was by far the oddest thing I’ve heard thus far on American Idol. Of course, I don’t watch EVERY week or even all of any episode. So who knows what other goodies I’m missing. I enjoyed last year’s INXS throwback, and I liked the winner last season. But while Adam was singing, I kept thinking I was listening to Freddie Mercury on a Johnny Cash tribute album. Then, Randy hit the nail on the head, …so to speak. That was exactly what Ring of Fire would sound like if it was covered by NIN (Nine Inch Nails). Now, … since it’s been at least 16 years since I’ve heard NIN, I’m going back to the laundry before anything else odd happens.

    Happy folding!!

    Today’s Helpful Tip …

It’s good for the budget and good for the planet. You don’t have to use a whole dryer sheet in each load of laundry. If you use dryer sheets, cut all the sheets in half when you first open the box. You can turn a box of 40 into a box 80 in about 2 minutes.

A few other good uses for dryer sheets (or half a dryer sheet):

  • Put them in your sweater boxes when you put away your sweaters each spring.
  • Need to freshen the Family Room? Put a dryer sheet under the sofa cushions.
  • Use them in the linen closet where you store blankets that may not be frequently used.
  • Reportedly, these can be used to repel mosquitoes too. I’ve never tried this, but in theory just rubbing one on your skin is enough to deter the little monsters. Hmmmm…
  • DIY says “A sheet will repel mosquitoes on your patio. Hang a dryer sheet outdoors during the mosquito season.
  • Don’t tangle your thread. A sewing needle run through a dryer sheet prior to sewing, can help prevent the thread from tangling.
  • Smelly shoes? Placing a dryer sheet in your shoes or sneakers overnight, will help to deodorize them and as a bonus they will smell much better in the AM.
  • Slip a dryer sheet inside your work out bag and help “disguise” some of the odor that follows you home from the gym.
  • A dryer sheet will help clean up a work bench. Like a tack cloth, it will attract sawdust and wood shavings.
